On Restraint: Why Zaposs Will Never Make a Loud T-Shirt

Studio Notes — June 2026

There is a kind of confidence that doesn’t need to announce itself. That’s what we’re designing for.

Every season, someone will pitch us a graphic. A statement piece. Something to “drive engagement” or “stand out on the feed.” And every season, we decline. Not because we don’t understand the appeal — we do — but because it isn’t what Zaposs is for.

The Loud Problem

A loud T-shirt is easy to make and easy to sell once. It gets worn to the occasion it was designed for, photographed, posted — and then it goes to the back of the wardrobe. Because loud clothes have a context, and most of life isn’t that context.

We’re interested in the other kind of piece. The one that gets worn on Tuesday to nothing in particular and still looks right. The one that earns its place in a rotation and stays there for years. That piece almost never has a graphic on it.

“Restraint isn’t the absence of a point of view. It’s the most confident point of view there is.”

What Restraint Actually Means

For us, restraint is an active choice made at every step. It means a palette of five colourways instead of twenty-two. It means a woven label inside the collar instead of a screenprint across the chest. It means hems that sit exactly where they need to, not an inch lower for drama.

It also means saying no to things that would sell. We know a limited-edition graphic drop would move units. We’re choosing not to do it because the person we’re building for doesn’t need that from us. They need something better made than what they’re already wearing. That’s the brief.

The Wearer We’re Thinking About

They already know what they like. They don’t need to be told what’s in season. They buy less and wear more. They appreciate when something fits well without needing to be explained. They wear their clothes — they don’t perform them.

That’s who we’re making Zaposs for. And that person is best served by clothes that get out of the way and let them be the interesting part of the outfit.
